A Political & Historical Journey: An Introduction to the Series
Every nation has its own story. Ours is one of resilience, vision, struggle, and transformation. From the midnight of 15th August 1947 to the present day, India’s journey as the world’s largest democracy has been nothing short of extraordinary. Over the last 7-8 decades, we have seen the nation evolve from the chaos of partition into a global voice with growing influence.
This blog marks the beginning of a special series – India After 1947: A Political & Historical Journey. Over the next 1 Year (52 weeks), I will take you through 52 key events in post-independent India’s history, with a blog releasing every Sunday.
Our timeline is carefully divided into seven distinct phases, each covering a crucial era in India’s political and historical evolution:

The Seven Phases We Will Cover
- The Birth of a Nation (1947–1952)
Partition, refugee crisis, integration of princely states, Kashmir conflict, Nehru’s vision, and India’s first general elections. - The Nehruvian Era & Early Challenges (1952–1964)
Five-Year Plans, Hindu Civil Code, State Reorganisation Act, Non-Aligned Movement, and the wars of the 1960s. - Political Transitions & Tumult (1964–1971)
Leadership change after Nehru, Indira Gandhi’s rise, Green Revolution, the 1971 elections, and the birth of Bangladesh. - The Age of Emergency & Its Shadows (1971–1977)

Why This Series?
I am Naman Bhutra and this series is a labour of love. I have always been deeply fascinated by the political history of post-independent India, not just as a sequence of events but as a living story of people, policies, conflicts and compromises that have shaped who we are today.
Unfortunately, in our fast-paced world, we often read about these events in isolation – a war here, an election there, a movement somewhere without connecting the dots. This series aims to bridge that gap. We will explore not just what happened, but why it happened and how each moment is linked to the next.
The Format of Each Blog
- One blog per week – Every Sunday.
- Length – Each blog will be within 1000-1500 words, so it’s concise enough to read over coffee but detailed enough to give you depth.
- Structure – Each piece will follow a storytelling approach, combining historical facts, political context and human stories to keep it engaging.
What You Can Expect to Learn
By the end of this series, you will have a clear chronological understanding of:
- How India handled the immediate challenges after independence.
- The way leadership styles shaped our democratic journey.
- How wars, elections, reforms and mass movements influenced public life.
- The evolution of our economy from socialism to liberalisation to the modern digital age.
- The political shifts that brought new parties, new coalitions and new leaders to the forefront.
Why Now?
We are living in a period where history is constantly being reinterpreted and debated. To have meaningful discussions about India’s present and future, we must understand where we come from. This is not about glorifying or criticising individuals blindly – it is about understanding events, decisions, and their consequences.
An Invitation to Join the Journey
Over the next 52 weeks, I invite you to travel with me across decades – from the first cries of independence to the debates of modern-day India. We will celebrate triumphs, acknowledge mistakes, and learn from the choices that have shaped the destiny of 1.4 billion people.
Whether you are a student, a history enthusiast, a political observer, or simply someone curious about India’s journey, this series is for you.
So, let’s begin. This is Blog 0 – the inception. The next blog will take us straight to the midnight of freedom, the chaos and hope that marked India’s first hours as an independent nation.
The story of India after 1947 is not just history – it’s the story of us all, so hope to see you on Sunday with our Blog 1.1: “The Midnight of Freedom: Independence, Partition & the Shaping of Modern India”.
